Garry Swain
Selected by Pittsburgh Penguins round 1 #4 overall 1968 NHL Amateur Draft.
Center Garry Swain played nine games for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1968-69. Although his NHL tenure was short, he was a useful offensive player in the WHA and the minors.
Beginning in 1974-75, Swain spent 2 1/2 years with the WHA's New England Whalers as a solid two-way worker. On Sept 11/01, I guess being Canadian, it did not have the same impact on me as it did to our neighbours to the south. I remember just getting in to work and someone mentioned a plane crashing into the World Trade Center. I listened to the newscasts all day wondering if Canada was going to be next. Thankfully, I did not know of anybody or anybody's relatives who were killed. But, a moment that defined a generation had taken two of hockey’s own.
Ace Bailey, along with fellow Kings scout Mark Bavis, were killed when United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
I remember getting Mr. Bailey's autograph but can't seem to find it at the moment.
