Selected by Montreal Canadiens round 1 #8 overall 1972 NHL Amateur Draft
He played on a powerhouse line with Steve Shutt and captain Bill Harris on the Toronto Marlboros in junior hockey.

Son of former NHL player Cal Gardner.  Older brother of former NHL player Paul Gardner. Father of former major junior and Swiss league player Ryan Gardner.Gardner played the last five years of pro hockey in Switzerland, retiring after the 1984-85 season.
