Aug 21--1999/2000 Topps Stadium Club hockey

Sixteen players and three days in a row with nothing to show.  Time for pack rip of

1999/2000 Topps Stadium Club hockey

4 cards per pack. Feels pretty thick. Action photo on front with head and shoulders shot on back little write up and a 1998/99 Statistical Breakdown.I can't remember if this is a retail or hobby pack.

Approximate odds per pack of finding: Chrome refractor 1:4, Chrome Parallel Refractor 1:8, *Sequentially Numbered 1st Day Issue 1:32, Lone Star Signatures: Group 1 1:2513, Group 2 1:838, group 3 1:3350 Group 4 1:628 Overall Lone Star Signature 1:287 (See box bottom for list of players within each group), Capture the action 1:19, OnyxExtreme 1:23, Onyx Extreme Die-Cuts 1:115, Goalie Cam 1:37, Eyes of the game 1:23, Eyes of the Game Refractor 1:115

You'd think with the number of inserts, it would be easy to get something, but, then again, this in only one pack of four cards. Let's see how I did.

Foil wrapper.

One of the reasons it felt thick was the inclusion of this paper check list.

Card # 66 Patrick Roy Front and back

May 28, 2003 press conference to announce his retirement.

 Card # 86 Scott Young

Retired after the 05/06 saeaon.

ROOKIE CARD

Card # 186 Oleg Saprykin

Playing in Russia since the end of the 06/07 season.

HIT

Stadium Club Chrome Refractor #18 Mike Modano
Played last season with Detroit.

The only differences are the "chrome" background , the Stadium Club chrome logo and the crossed hockey sticks.

I don't remember price on this but its probably less now. Well, that was fun. More goodness to come.

Aug 20-- 1996 Upper Deck SP Hockey Pack Rip

August is turning out to be a bad month for me trying to post autographed items for a player celebrating a birthday on each day.  Since yesterday's pack rip was well received, today I 'll rip hmmm, 95/96 Upper Deck SP Hockey. I have random unopened packs and boxes from various years.

1996 Upper Deck SP Hockey

8 Super premium hockey cards per pack. These were thick cards and featured three photos. On the front, a full shot over a foil background and a smaller head shot. The back had another photo, a little write up and career year and 94/95 season stats.

This was in the era where they stated the odds of pulling inserts.

This pack contains a random assortment of 1996 Upper Deck SP Hockey cards numbered 1-188. Randomly inserted in these specially marked packs are Upper Deck Stars/Etoiles (silver) (1:3), Upper Deck Stars/Etoiles (gold) (1:61), Holoview (1:5), Special F/X Holoview (1:75), Wayne Gretzky's Record Collection (1:45) and Great Connection (1:381) insert cards. Stated odds reflect an average of the entire production run; this ratio is not guaranteed to exist within an individual box or case.

Wrapper and no gum (with spokesman Wayne Gretzky's image)

Card # 23 Chris Chelios (front and back)

On August 31, 2010, Chelios officially retired

Card #39 Todd Harvey

After the amazing cup run with the Edmonton Oilers in the 2006 Playoffs, Harvey was bought out for the rest of his contract and was unable to find a new team in the off-season.

Card #96 Niklas Sundstrom

After 11 NHL seasons (at the start of the 2006–07 season) , he returned to play in  Sweden.

Card #123 Dale Hawerchuk

Hawerchuk announced his retirement from the game following the 1996-97 season at age 34.

Card # 135 Roman Hamrlik

Hamrlik signed a two-year contract worth $7 million with the Washington Capials on July 1, 2011.

Card # 166 Oleg Tverdosky

Tverdovsky played the 2007–08 season in Russia where he still plays today.

Card #E7 Jeremy Roenick

I'm assuming this is the silver version (1:3) as the background foil is silver.
On August 6, 2009, Roenick announced his retirement from the National Hockey League

Card # FX 9 Doug Weight

Weight announced his retirement following the  2010/2011 season on May 26, 2011.

Again, I'm assuming this is the FX Holoview (1:75) . Its kind of creepy looking because if you turn the card, the face kind of shifts but the background doesn't move at all.

Don't remember the price but was probably around $4.00 a pack.

Fun break and two hits. Have to wait and see what I will do the next time.

Enjoy.

Aug 19--81/82 OPC pack rip

Contest Alert (not mine) over at Cheap Card Collecting.

14 players share today as their birthday but nary an autographed item found in the man cave for any of them. So, for a change , a pack rip--81/82 OPC hockey.  This pack may contain great rookies and star cards. Is that like a bag of peanuts with the warning "This product may contain nuts. Possible rookies include Savard, Kurri, Moog, Ciccarelli, Anderson and Coffey($80). Star cards that book for $40 or more include Gretzky and Bourque. Pack includes 14 cards and the mandatory piece of gum. Since I haven't figured out (or tried to) how to do a video (like Sal at http://puckjunk.blogspot.com/ ) it'll just be show and tell time.

First the crinkly wrapper (Ted-moremonkeys138)

The slab of unchewed pinkish stuff.

Front of special offer card

Back of special offer card (I guess its the front if you read en francais) where the gum was stuck.

I'm ready to send in $10.00 includes postage and handling for a set ( heck, why not $20.00 for two sets )

Now for the goodies.

The Wax Stain Veteran (sorry Dave H)

The other card where the gum was attached (stain on front). This was put in the freezer to get the gum to release its hold on Pat.

The rest of the pack

What, you say. That's only 13 cards. Where's the other one?

Pretty good shape. The usual rough cut edge and off centre. I'll take it though. Not too bad. Now I want to rip some more. Another day, another twenty dollars.

August 18--Geoff Courtnall

Geoff Courtnall

The speedy Geoff Courtnall was signed by the Boston Bruins of the NHL as an undrafted free agent on 6 July 1983.

Courtnall was clearly a success story, playing 17 NHL seasons, having never been drafted. He finished his career with 367 goals, 432 assists, and 799 points to go along with 109 playoff points. After sitting out the last half of the 1998–99 season with a concussion he returned to the lineup the next season. But only a few games in he went down again with yet another concussion, forcing Courtnall's retirement shortly after that hit during the 1999–2000 season as a result of post-concussion syndrome.

August 17--Jim Dorey

Jim Dorey

Selected by Toronto Maple Leafs round 4 #23 overall 1964 NHL Amateur Draft
Known for his rugged, yet clean style of play, Jim Dorey enjoyed a lengthy professional hockey career, primarily based on a solid work ethic.

Like many NHL players, Dorey was attracted to the offer of more money in the new rival World Hockey Association, so he jumped to the WHA for their inaugural season in 1972-73 as a member of the New England Whalers. Dorey played two full seasons in New England before going to the Toronto Toros midway through the 1974-75 season. He started in 74 games for the Toros the following year and scored nine goals and 51 assists for 60 points.
Dorey spent three years with the WHA's Quebec Nordiques from 1976 to 1979.

August 12--Rosaire Paiement

Rosaire Paiement

Starting in 1964, he spent two seasons with the Niagara Falls Flyers of the OHA before turning pro with the New Jersey Devils of the EHL in 1966. In 1968, Paiement was called up to the NHL by the Flyers just ahead of their first-ever playoff run. In his first post-season match, he attained his career highlight by scoring a hat trick against Glenn Hall of the St. Louis Blues.
Paiement then bounced between the Flyers and the Quebec Aces of the AHL until he was claimed by the expansion Vancouver Canucks in 1970. It was on the West Coast that he finally saw regular NHL action, netting a career-high 34 goals in his first season with the club.
Paiement completed only one more campaign in Vancouver before he was lured to the WHA where he skated for six additional seasons with Chicago, New England, and Indianapolis. His career came to an abrupt end when, during a scuffle with Dave Semenko, Paiement was elbowed and then sucker-punched in the left eye. The damage to his sight was so severe that it forced his retirement from hockey.

Return envelope and postcard from his then business.

Letter received back. I actually sent him back one of each card and also a complete 84/85 OPC set. I thought it was a pretty good trade off.

August 11--Chuck Rayner

Chuck Rayner

Rayner's professional career began with the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League in 1940-41 where he earned an AHL Second Team All-Star selection. The New York Americans were interested enough to call him up for a 12-game tryout before the end of the season. The following year, he played just one game with Springfield before he was called up to the NHL and appeared in 36 games for the newly-christened Brooklyn Americans. Rayner interrupted his hockey career to enlist in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II and did not return to the NHL until the 1945-46 season, this time as a member of the New York Rangers.
He was an NHL Second Team All-Star and appeared in the All Star game in 1949, 1950, and 1951. He is one of only five goalies to be awarded the Hart Trophy as most valuable player, winning the award in 1950. He was also known as one of the first wandering goalies. On more than one occasion he made a save and skated up ice with the puck before hustling back into goal. Twice in particular he came right in on the opposition goalie in an NHL game and almost scored!
In 377 games for the Blueshirts, Chuck posted a 123–180-72 record with a 2.99 goals-against average with 24 shutouts.
He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1973, the second goaltender in history to be inducted with a losing record.
