Nov 30--Sweeney Schriner

Nov 30
Sweeney Schriner

Dave "Sweeney" Schriner was only a month old when his parents migrated to Calgary from their native Russia.
In 1934-35 the New York Americans offered Schriner a job. Schriner jumped at the chance as the NHL paid fairly well in the midst of the Great Depression.
He would win the Calder Trophy as the NHL rookie of the year in 1935, and lead the NHL in scoring in 1936 and again in 1937. In the summer of 1939, Schriner was traded in a mammoth deal designed to give the Americans the depth they needed to become a better team, and to give Toronto a super star. Toronto traded Buzz Boll, Doc Romnes, Jim Fowler, Murray Armstrong and former super star Busher Jackson to New York all for Schriner. In 484 NHL games, his totals were 201 goals, 204 assists totaling 405 points with 148 PIM.

He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1962.

This one was TTM.
Since I didn't have any of his cards, I sent a couple of index cards for him to sign.

He also included this HHOF postcard signed in blue sharpie.

This month I was 23/30 for my birthday project, about 76%. Not too bad.
For the NaBlo Wrimo project, I'm going to fall short of the target 15000 words. It's possible I could have done it if I had no computer problems. Being out of commission for 10 days put a crimp in those plans. I figured I wouldn't be able to catch up so I didn't write a whole lot. Still, I did try to keep updated daily. Heres my final count.

And tomorrow is December 1 so my 'mo will be leaving my face sometime tonight. I've got to make myself look younger so a nice close shave should do the trick.

Norm Beaudin

Norm Beaudin hockey player photo

After a four-year junior career, Beaudin signed with the Montreal Canadiens organization.
He played1963 with their farm team in Hull-Ottawa. The following year saw him claimed in the waiver draft by the Detroit Red Wings organization, where he spent the next four seasons, mostly with their Pittsburgh Hornets and Memphis Wings farm teams. In 1967, he was claimed by the Blues in the expansion draft, and made his NHL debut in that season, while spending most of the season with the Blues' Kansas City affiliate. He was loaned to the American Hockey League Buffalo Bisons in 1968, and subsequently played the next three seasons for the Cleveland Barons of the AHL. In that time, his rights were traded to the North Stars, for whom he played 12 games in the 1971 season.
He was the first player signed by the WHA Winnipeg Jets when the franchise came into being in 1972. The signing was not made public for fear of a public backlash over making a longtime minor leaguer their first signing. Beaudin's signing was finally announced following the signings of goaltenders Ernie Wakely and Joe Daley.
Norm capped off a stellar run with the Jets when he was an Assistant Captain in 1976, the year they won their first of three Avco Cup Championships.Following the 1975-1976 season, he moved on and finished his playing career in Switzerland.

Beaudin finished his WHA career with 97 goals and 155 assists for 252 points in 309 games, adding 37 points in 31 playoff games. He also had one goal and two assists in 25 NHL games.

The NHL's Central Scouring Bureau ranked Al the top goaltender available for the 1978 draft.
Netminder Al Jensen was a solid NHL performer throughout the 1980s. He was an experienced amateur and international player who also excelled during the short time he spent in the minor leagues.
Success followed Al Jensen around during his hockey career. The Hamilton native won the Memorial Cup with his hometown Hamilton Fincups, then won the International Hockey League’s Turner Cup and the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup before he broke into the NHL with Detroit in 1980-81. The following season, Jensen joined the Washington Capitals and led them to their first Stanley Cup Playoffs berth in 1982-83
On December 14, 1982, Al was the goaltender who allowed Marcel Dionne's 500th career National Hockey League goal.
Jensen has been NHL Central Scouting’s goaltender scout for the past 10 years, and his evaluations have proven solid.

Nov 24--Murray Hall

Nov 24
Murray Hall

Murray Hall hockey player photo

Murray Hall made his NHL debut with the Chicago Black Hawks during the 1961-62 season with a two-game appearance. He spent the majority of the next two seasons in the minors before returning for a 23-game stint with the Hawks in 1963-64.
Claimed by Detroit in the Intra-league Draft in June 1964, Hall put up enough points with the Pittsburgh Hornets to merit the periodic invitation up to Detroit for regular seasons or playoff games between 1964 and 1967. The 1967 Expansion Draft saw him move to Minnesota. He played 17 games for the North Stars before a series of trades sent him to the Rochester Americans (AHL) and the Vancouver Canucks (WHL).
When Vancouver became a part of the expanding NHL, Hall's rights were transferred to the new franchise. He spent a full season and a half with the Canucks before returning to Rochester and the AHL. He was selected by the Houston Aeros of the WHA in the 1972 General Player Draft and stayed with that franchise through the 1975-76 season. He spent part of the next two seasons in the CHL and OHA Sr. before retiring in 1978.

Nov 3

Nothing for any of the 13 players whose birthday it is, so from Sept 3

Gerry Meehan

Selected by Toronto Maple Leafs round 4 #21 overall 1963 NHL Amateur Draft

Centre Gerry Meehan was a fine scorer and playmaker who could also check effectively.

Meehan's career as an NHL player came to a sudden end in early December 1978, when his pro hockey rights were sold by Washington to Cincinnati (WHA). Upset by the move, Meehan initially refused to report to Cincinnati and took his family back to their home in Buffalo. After a few days, Meehan decided to honor his contract and accept the deal rather than retire. He went to Cincinnati, where he was promptly injured on his first shift and ended up playing a total of only two WHA games before opting to retire in 1979.

After completing his undergraduate degree from Canisius College in Buffalo, he graduated from the University at Buffalo School of Law in 1982.

Nov 22--Jacques Laperriere

Now I'm caught up and can continue my regularly scheduled autograph post on a daily basis. I'm finding this a good way to share my memories and I hope you enjoy it too. I'm having a blast doing it and seeing stuff I didn't remember having. Of course, then my memories are rekindled and the stories come to the forefront. (light the corners of my mind).

Nov 22

Jacques Laperriere

He was developed in the Habs' junior and minor pro franchises in Ottawa-Hull and Montreal before joining the NHL on a full-time basis in 1963-64.

His solid debut was acknowledged when he was awarded the Calder Trophy as the league's rookie of the year  and he was also selected to the NHL Second All-Star Team as a defenceman. Laperrière also played in the NHL All-Star Game.
Injuries plagued Laperrière throughout his career, forcing him to miss almost 100 games over the course of his 10 seasons with the Canadiens.
A serious knee injury cut his season down to 42 games in 1973-74 and he was forced to retire with six Stanley Cup rings and nearly 300 career points. Laperriere's excellence received the ultimate validation in 1987 when he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

An arena in his hometown of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec has been named in his honor.

Received these two blue ink signed cards TTM. Two oddball cards, one being the Esso AllStar card that I did a pack rip of recently and the Dad's cookie set. I guess I didn't have any regular issue cards to send.

Lane Lambert

Selected by Detroit Red Wings round 2 #25 overall 1983 NHL Entry Draft.
He was a talented offensive player for three different clubs in the 1980s. He was a good passer who could play abrasively while assaulting the opposition's goal.
Named  an assistant coach for the Nashville Predators on June 9, 2011.[

Nov 19

Dennis Hull

A fine player in his own right, Dennis was always overshadowed by his older brother Bobby, and years later by his nephew Brett. But since his playing days Dennis has carved out a tremendous career as a celebrity spokesman. With his families natural charism and humour and his large collection of stories to tell, Dennis has become quite the entertainer.

Nov 20
John van Boxmeer

Selected by Montreal Canadiens round 1 #14 overall 1972 NHL Amateur Draft.

In 1972 a young Montreal Canadiens prospect, John Van Boxmeer, received a call from his lawyer and agent, Alan Eagleson. Eagleson told him that Team Canada, then in training for their now famous 1972 series with the Russians, needed a junior defenseman after Jacques Laperriere withdrew from the team. Van Boxmeer jumped at the chance to train with players like Esposito, Mahovlick and Cournoyer. He didn't play in the series but he did get exposed to the best players of that era and what it took to play with them.

Lindsay Carson

Selected by Philadelphia Flyers round 3 #56 overall 1979 NHL Entry Draft.
Carson was a good skater and a pop-gun scorer buried on the third and fourth line of the Flyers in the 1980s. In junior he was a scoring star, but not so much in the NHL. He scored 66 goals in his 373 game career, including seasons of 18 and 20 goals.

This is one of the few autographs I bought. It was at a card show in the 80's and I believe cost me twenty five cents.

Just about caught up now for the month. I'm surprised I can still find stuff to show here.

Thought I had Josh Green and had him scheduled in here. Turns out I had Josh Holden. So a capable replacement is
Dave Forbes

Signed as a free agent in 1973 by the Boston Bruins.
Forbes was charged with aggravated assault in 1975 after butt-ending Henry Boucha's eye socket in a game against the Minnesota North Stars. The trial received much publicity as it was highly unusual for an athlete to face criminal charges for actions taken in the course of competition. The trial ended with the jury unable to reach a decision and the charges were not refiled. Coincidentally, I also have Henry Boucha's autograph.

Nov 17
Dennis Maruk

Selected by California Seals round 2 #21 overall 1975 NHL Amateur Draft
Selected by Cleveland Crusaders round 5 #65 overall 1975 WHA Amateur Draft
Like any small man in a big-man's game, Dennis Maruk has had to contend with skeptics about his business of dazzling all parties concerned with his spectacular play.
In 888 NHL games, he scored 356 goals and had 522 assists. He was also one of my choices for best moustache in NHL history. Yep, that fu manchu was pretty awesome.

Brian Cullen

Brian Cullen hockey player photo

Brian Cullen was the oldest of three brothers who played hockey in the NHL. Brian Cullen and his younger brother, Barry, played together with the Maple Leafs for four years between 1955 and 1959 before Brian moved on to New York to play with the Rangers and Barry headed west to suit up for the Detroit Red Wings. Younger brother Ray did not begin playing in the NHL until 1965.
I don't know if he can still be reached at Brian Cullen Motors but its the same address I used in 1984.

Trying to do this from memory, thought I had Mark Fitzpatrick as I knew I did not have any of the other 17 players.

Pack rip time.

1988/89 Esso AllStar Collection

Put out by Esso gas, you got a pack with a fill up. There was an album with 5 "stickers" already in place and you had to collect the remaining 48 for a complete set. My father knew someone who ran an Esso and at the end of the promotion, I got the remaining packs. ( must have been around 50 packs). As it is an all-star set, there would be as expected all-stars galore. Lets see what we have.

Besides the header card with the NHL and Esso logos, we have six cards. Full bleed colour photo with facsimile autograph, name and team logo.

Backs have the checklist. Quite a list of all-stars from the 60's, 70's and 80's. As noted on the back, you had to moisten the surface to stick in the album. Haven't done that yet with any of the sets (how many?). The price was right and not a common. Somewhere I also acquired this in an uncut sheet form of 3 sheets x 16 cards (4 rows of 4)=48

Slowly but surely I'm catching up. The hard part is pulling the cards and then putting them away again. Also trying to remember if I had an envelope saved. The memory ain't what it used to be. Except I do remember when the Leafs won the Cup. Go Leafs Go

So I'm going to try and catch up posting the birthday blogs. I'll post a couple a day and forego the bio and stats. For some of  the older players, I try to keep the history alive and if someone reading this does some research on a player they didn't know of previously, that's great. I'm posting three today with a little story on each.

Ted McAneeley

Selected by California Golden Seals round 4 #47 overall 1970 NHL Amateur Draft

Now with all the moving around I've done in the past few years, I still haven't unpacked everything and here's an example of what can happen. I can't seem to find the autographed cards of Ted McAneeley. I know I had the cards but can't find them.

Here's the envelope I received back.

Inside was a note from his mother saying Ted and his family had moved to Maui. She forwarded my cards and I remember thinking I would not get them back. I did but like Waldo, where's the cards.
It appears that he is still in Hawaii.

Now I actually had obtained his autograph 20 years earlier. From one of my earlier posts, Simpsons Sears had him signing when he released a 45 rpm single, Honky, the Christmas Goose. I had the record cover signed and also a b/w post card. I have neither any more. Alas.

Selected by Toronto Maple Leafs round 1 #10 overall 1973 NHL Amateur Draft
Selected by Chicago Cougars round 1 #1 overall 1973 WHA Amateur Draft
First we have a McAneeley and now a Neely. I was a year ahead of him in high school in Hamilton but knew him as I watched a lot of Hamilton Red Wing games. In those days, "Tub" wasn't at school much. Neither were some of his teammates, former NHL'ers Ed Gilbert, Pat Hickey and Jim Schoenfeld.
